- Union leaders say staff are struggling to access bank loans and meet basic expenses as the budget remains pending.
- Workers threaten to protest at MCAs’ homes if the County Assembly fails to approve the budget by Tuesday.
Machakos County government workers marched to the County Assembly on Monday to demand immediate passage of the 2026/2027 budget.
The workers, led by Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Vice Chairman Mr Boniface Mitambo and County Workers Union Chair Ms Ruth John, presented a petition to the Assembly. They said the delay in passing the budget was unacceptable and was hurting both workers and service delivery.
“We are here today to present our petition concerning the delay in the passage of the 2026/2027 Budget. The Executive presented the budget estimates, but to our disappointment, the budget has not been passed to date,” said Mr Mitambo.
He added that workers were struggling to access bank loans after being blacklisted by financial institutions, leaving many unable to meet basic needs including paying school fees for their children.

Ms John expressed surprise that Members of County Assembly (MCAs) had stayed away from the Assembly upon learning of the planned demonstration.
She warned that if the budget is not passed by Tuesday, workers will take their grievances directly to MCAs.
“We are asking all workers to assemble at each individual MCA’s home from tomorrow if the budget is not passed. We will be taking tea at your homes. We will come for salaries at your homes and treatment at your homes,” Ms John said.
There was a heavy security presence at the Assembly gates as hundreds of wananchi gathered to support the workers.
