Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has stressed the importance of reviving the county’s agricultural sector as part of her government’s effort to diversify the economy, with the aim of boosting food security, job creation and rural development in the region.
Wavinya said her aim was to improve farming, noting that this will create both direct and indirect employment opportunities for youths and residents of the county. She added that it will also increase internally generated revenue through agribusiness activities and allied services.
Speaking at Muthetheni Ward during a development tour of Mwala sub-county, she observed that agriculture was an integral part of the county’s plan for sustainable economic growth and development.
“My government is transforming lives by creating new economic opportunities for local residents. Today, we stocked the dam with additional fish fingerlings to enhance fish production, strengthen aquaculture, and create more sustainable sources of food and income for the local community,” the county boss added.
The governor said she will continue to support the farming activities already being practised by residents in growing and selling crops such as tomatoes, sukuma wiki, spinach, bananas, sugarcane and sweet potatoes, among others.

“As a governor, I will continue to support farmers by providing them with seeds, seedlings and planting vines. This is not just an investment in a water resource but the perfect foundation for my realisation of Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni in Machakos,” she added.
At the same time, the governor said cooperative societies remain an important pillar in strengthening local economies by bringing farmers and other producers together, improving access to markets and creating opportunities for value addition.
“To support Mumi Farmers Cooperative Society in Muthetheni Ward, I have issued a cheque worth Ksh 1.225 million to improve its operations, including automation of key processes. The automation will enhance efficiency, improve record-keeping and service delivery, and enable the cooperative to better serve and support its members,” the county boss added.
She noted that the investment will strengthen the cooperative and improve the economic well-being of its members.
