A wall that will cost Sh200 million will be constructed to surround Bandari Sacco’s land in Nguu Tatu in Kisauni, Mombasa.
Justice Anne Omolo ordered police to provide security for the company that is constructing the perimeter wall, which is intended to keep off squatters.
The Sacco’s lawyer, Joseph Munyithya, said that members of the society wanted those who want the construction of the wall to go on to deposit Sh200 million for the expenses the society might incur.
SM Kimani, who is the squatters’ lawyer, however, wanted his clients to be allowed to go back to the land.
Bandari Sacco Chairman Ken Sungu, however, assured members of the safety of their land.
Sungu said the 60acre chunk of land is secure amid tension from the over 5,000 squatters who have threatened to pull down the perimeter wall and subdivide the land among themselves.
The Sacco started putting up a perimetre wall around the plot amid protest from the squatters.
The chairman allayed fears that the threats may affect its members and the Sacco operations.
Dock Workers Union Secretary General Simon Sang dismissed fears by the Sacco management saying port management and Sacco activities are different entities.
The society members said they will not allow their investment which they have saved for a long time to be taken away.
The Sacco improved its asset base to Sh6. 8 billion in 2016 up from Sh6 billion reported in 2015.
The growth represents a 12.9 per cent increase. The society boasts of over 15,000 members.
