Cooperatives will be revived-Governor

By Godfrey Wamalwa.
Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati (pictured) will seek support from the County Assembly members in legislating laws that will seal the loopholes in the Cooperative sector.
Speaking during his inauguration, the governor said the laws will unleash the potential within the Cooperative movement in spurring the county’s economic growth.
“A major catalyst in growing our economy is the Cooperative movement but sadly it is on the verge of collapse due to poor management”, he said.
The governor said although there are a number of commercial activities in the county, an industrial base is non-existent. “Cooperatives were once very strong in this county and they helped improve the livelihoods of residents especially at the grassroots, and this is why we want to revive them”, added Wangamati.
Trade and industry, the governor said, are key components in accelerating economic development, reducing poverty and enabling equitable income distribution.
