Counties urged to support cooperatives

Uasin Gishu County Cooperatives and Enterprise Development Executive Esther Mutai has challenged counties to support the cooperative movement.

Speaking in Eldoret town recently, Mutai said this is the only way the country’s economic growth would be propelled to greater heights and subsequently empower the locals.

“We should embrace the culture of saving through joining cooperative societies,” she said.

She said they were working with cooperatives to promote value addition.

She said his department had developed a model corporate governance and leadership training.

She noted that so far over 450 cooperative leaders from 90 co-operatives have been trained.

Mutai further said that the county has revived cooperatives and formed new ones.

“We have a total of 650 registered cooperatives in Uasin Gishu where 325 are active out of which 200 are Saccos,” she added.
