Consumer Grassroots Association (CGA) has pointed out that some farmers are still using harmful chemicals to produce food.

Speaking during a workshop in Karen attended by food stakeholders who included journalists, food experts, agriculture officers, farmers, civil societies on food systems in the country; CGA director Alice Kemunto said that safety of food is a big concern in the country.

She pointed out that there are challenges under food production since a good number of farmers do not have the relevant knowledge in the that area, making others to use dangerous farm inputs which affect the environment and the consumers.

“We have put our heads together to find out how to transform food system in the country for Kenyans we should protect our consumers against harmful chemicals,’’ said Kemunto.

The media was challenged to educate farmers on methods of producing food in the safe way.

CGA is advocating for Agro-ecology as an alternative farming system, which gives sustainable food system and protection of environment.

Agro-ecology is an integrated approach that simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of food and agricultural systems.  Within a justice and rights framework, it seeks to minimize external inputs and optimize sustainable interactions between plants, animals, humans and the broader environment.

Prof. David Ayuku who was one of the presenters during the workshop said there need to be food policies that promote consumer health.

Kenya has a number of Food Safety policies that envisages protecting and promoting consumer health while facilitating the orderly development of the food industries as well as fair practices in food trade but implementation has been a challenge.
