Governor Mbarire promises to fight cartels in coffee sub-sector

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire has promised to fight cartels in the coffee sub-sector as a move to ensure farmers get the right and good income from their produce.

Addressing the press at Runyenjes town in Embu County, the governor pointed out that better prices for coffee produce will lead to improved livelihood for farmers.

The upper Embu County region is known for coffee production. However, in the recent past farmers have been getting close to peanuts due to trumpeting coffee prices at the international markets mainly blamed on cartels.

“We shall not be intimidated by the cartels,” said an agitated Mbarire, who also challenged farmers to embrace modern farming methods.

She argued that the new methods, which can be learnt through agricultural education days, will enable the farmers have better yields and high quality coffee.

Mbarire noted that farmers need some level of education and skills to understand the new inputs required in improving coffee quality.

“It’s important for farmers to be knowledgeable about how to improve coffee farming, yields and quality.  They should realize that new methods and types of high yielding coffee are emerging hence they need to acquire knowledge about the same,” said the governor.
