Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has called on the leadership of various county Cooperative Societies to instill good governance.
Speaking at the County headquarters during a meeting with cooperatives leaders to ensure the societies keep running as they have proven to be among key sectors that contribute immensely to the growth of businesses and economies.
“I want to call upon the leadership of cooperative Societies to ensure that they effectively and transparently deliver on their mandate as they are entrusted by their members. The success of Cooperatives depend on the manner in which officials run and manage funds,” said governor Bii.
Governor said cooperative societies have the potential of making the economy of Uasin Gishu vibrant challenging them to embrace automation to not only ease the flow of information but also woo the youth who are the gurus in the digital space to join these ventures.
“Previous Cooperatives collapsed due to lack of transparency among the officials who had been given the mandate to be in charge of the finances. I also urge you to embrace emerging global trends. The county government has affected issuance of at least sh 648 million to over 200 Cooperatives recently being the issuance of Ksh 46 million to 27 Cooperatives,” he added.
He said that cooperatives that were closed due mismanagement are brought back.
“My administration is making strides to ensure that there’s promotion and revival of cooperatives besides conducting intensive capacity building for all players in the sector.
The department of trade and Cooperatives shall endeavor to work closely with all groups making exploits in their ventures even as we look forward to doubling our milk production, complete the construction of Moi Soy farmers milling plant as we set our eyes on value addition of our maize,” he said.
