Vihiga County Government has committed to support Savings and Credit Co-operatives (Saccos) through
establishment of a revolving fund.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting to discuss the performance of the Vihiga County Traders Sacco
in December 2022, the County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo hinted that the Sacco, which mainly draws
its membership from micro and small traders, would be a major beneficiary.
“Since its inception in 2008, this Sacco has transformed the lives of members by offering affordable
credit, which they use to start or expand businesses,” said Dr. Ottichilo.
The Governor, who is also among the biggest shareholders in the Sacco, disclosed that the membership
had grown from 1,282 in 2018 to 2,389 members currently; with its loan portfolio growing from Ksh 5.9
million in 2019 to Ksh 29 million currently.
According to Dr. Ottichilo, some members have invested wisely and ended up owning motor vehicles,
land and houses through the Sacco.
He encouraged other groups to embrace a saving culture so as to be able to pool resources together for
socio-economic development.
