The County Government of Kisumu intends to start demonstration farms in all wards as a means of promoting climate smart agriculture and ensuring food security.
The county executive committee member in charge of agriculture Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock Development and Irrigation Ken Onyango said the demonstration farms will be used in educating farmers on new farming methods such as smart agriculture.
Mr Onyango who was speaking at this year’s Agricultural society of Kenya regional show in Kisumu said that already such demonstration farms have been initiated in some wards in order to boost cotton farming.
The official said it is the intention of the establishment is to encourage the citizens to take up modern farming as a means of livelihood.
He said Kisumu County today is still a net importer of many consumer products hence the need to reverse the trend through home grown solutions.
Kisumu deputy governor Dr Mathew Owili on his part called on learning institutions to send their students to exhibitions.
Dr Owili said the students stand to learn a lot when they attend such shows and exhibitions.
ASK chairman George Ongudi said this year’s show was a major success compared to last year.
The chair said over 80 exhibitors are at the grounds at the Mamboleo area. He added that the show opened its gates on July 24 and will end on July 28 .
This year’s theme is “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for sustainable Economic Growth.”
He said there will be animal auction where quality animals will be auctioned during the show and will be done with the help of County Government of Kisumu’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
Ongudi said the entry fee for adults will be Khs 250 while children will pay Khs 200.
