The Nduluma Coffee Factory in Tharaka Nithi, recently promoted by the new Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (KPCU), achieved the top price at last week’s weekly coffee auction, with a bag of Grade AA coffee fetching Ksh46,562.

The factory, a member of the Tharaka Coffee Growers’ Cooperative Society, has earned a strong reputation for producing high-quality coffee beans, enhancing its standing in both local and international markets.

The Githembe Factory in Kiambu, which markets its produce through Alliance Berries, secured the second-highest price of Ksh43,622 per bag of Grade AA purchased by Sasini.

The weekly coffee auction generated Ksh465.3 million from the sale of 12,102 bags. The total consignment, weighing 745.242 kilograms, was purchased by 17 local and international buyers.

Most of the coffee bags in the auction were supplied by Alliance Berries and KPCU.

During the sale, Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) Chief Executive Lisper Ndung’u reported that eight brokers took part in the auction, with KPCU supplying 2,811 bags that were purchased for Ksh104.2 million.

KPCU, which was dissolved in 2009 due to financial mismanagement and operational inefficiencies, was re-established in 2021 as part of a larger initiative to reform and enhance the coffee sector in Kenya.

The new KPCU has several key roles including; marketing coffee from its member cooperatives, ensuring coffee beans meet quality standards, facilitating access to financial resources for cooperatives and farmers, and providing technical assistance and training on best practices in cultivation, processing, and management.

Additionally, the union represents the interests of coffee farmers and cooperatives to government bodies, industry stakeholders and other organizations, while also advocating for policies and practices that support the coffee sector.
