Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has said the county can achieve a 100% renewable energy in the electricity ,transport and clean cooking sectors through the rich and abundant renewable energy resources that exist within its territory.
Speaking while launching 100% renewable energy roadmap for Kisumu County, Nyong’o said that to promote industrialization and economic growth the county has focused on sustainable energy resources, environmental protection through climate change, co-development, inclusive participation and robust stakeholder engagement process and whole system approaches to energy thinking, science-based decision making models and city leadership for bold decision making.
He further said that the private sector academia and technocrats should play an important role in accelerating realization of county goals while connecting with the needs of residents.
Nyong’o added that their support should be leveraged further for their development of pipeline of bankable projects and the implementation of local homegrown and innovative solution.
“In this regard ,renewable energy resulting to energy efficiency will be key and not only just for countries with high energy consumption today but for low consumption countries like Kenya where majority do not have the luxury of turning lights on after darkness or cooking with polluting fuels” the governor said .
He commended ICLEI Local Government for Sustainability (International Council for Local Environment Initiatives- an International Non-Governmental Organization that promotes sustainable development and provides technical consultancy to local governments to develop and meet sustainability objectives)for supporting Kisumu in project preparation and development of four ready-to finance sustainable energy projects.
Nyong’o also applauded the team for identifying and engaging more than twenty potential funders for renewable energy-energy efficiency for health care facilities in Kisumu County.
According to the World Bank report 2020,approximately 53% of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa live without access to electricity while millions more have limited or unreliable electricity.
