Police in Marakwet West and Marakwet Boda Boda Sacco members are in pursuit of a gang suspected to be stealing motorbikes from the area and selling them to a neighbouring country.
The group is suspected to be stealing motorcycles belonging to Kapsowar Boda boda Sacco and other operators in Marakwet West and selling them in Uganda, according to the police.
Area police boss, Mathews Mang’ira while speaking to Sacco Review said the gang stole five motorbikes in a span of five days, adding that they were stolen at Cheptongei and Chebulbai Trading centres and in Kapsowar and Sinon recently.
Mr. Mang’ira said one motorcycle was recovered at Chemunada near the border of Elgeyo Marakwet and Trans Nzoia counties.
He said the police were working with security agencies in Trans Nzoia and West Pokot Counties in pursuit of the gang that has caused enormous losses to the Boda boda Sacco.
Mangira urged the Boda boda Sacco management officials to mobilize the operators to lock their motorbikes to avoid falling prey to the syndicate.
Kapsowar Sacco Boda boda Chairman, Johnstone Cheptoo, said the gang has left Boda boda operators in fear and that the local community will be in constant look out to help the police in nabbing the culprits.
