Elgeyo Marakwet Youth Bunge Sacco has embarked on a mission to invest in assets and business generating activities as a way of empowering the youth.
Speaking recently in Iten Town during the Annual Delegates Meeting, Chairman Nathan Tanui said that the society had grown its savings from Sh85,000 when it was established in 2012 to Sh1 million currently.
So far, he said, they have already identified a plot to buy for its members to build rental mansions for income generation for its members.
He added that the Sacco has already rolled out a programme to run M-Pesa business through Safaricom on behalf of the members.
“The society is growing tremendously and we are on course in offering efficient services to members. Our M-Banking service has become more successful as our members can easily transact from the comfort of their work places,” Tanui noted.
He said the Sacco is targeting a membership of 3,000 in the 2016/2017 Financial year so as to ensure that the youth in the County are empowered.
The Chairman said the boda boda business has been doing well for the youth but they have to empower farmers to take up crop farming and take up related loans as the area is favourable for the practice.
Tanui added they are currently educating the farmers on crops like cabbages which mature within a short time and which they can easily market .
The County Youth Bunge President Collins Kibet challenged the youth to engage in risk taking activities and take loans as a way of improving their lives through business activities.
He said they are currently having a programme which aims at training the youth on savings and how to manage business courtesy of Techno-serve and financial lending institutions.
