Saccos lauded for supporting farmers

Top Sacco Societies in Baringo , Boresha Sacco and Skyline have been hailed for embracing the spirit of co-operative movement in the county.
Speaking during Tugen Hills Farmers Field Day held recently at Katimok, Baringo North, Chairman, Eric Bargorett said the two saccos have supported farmers with loans.
He said continued support from the Saccos financially to the fast growing Tugen Hills Society has helped them thrive.
He noted that farmers through the field day were equipped with knowledge from Juanco on crop diseases affecting their coffee.
Tugen Hills Farmers Manager, Nicholas Chemelil appreciated efforts by farmers on coffee crop farming, saying Sh8.1 million was made from coffee sale directly to Korea.
He blamed fluctuating market prices on unscrupulous middlemen buying coffee at low prices thus hampering the coffee sector. Chemelil however warned farmers to keep off the middlemen who exploit them.
He urged the County Government through the concerned docket to enact laws to curb middlemen from buying the crop at a low prices.
‘‘Baringo has a potential to depend on coffee farming if farmers in the coffee growing zones fully embrace the crop. Support from the County Government and Korean partner Koica has greatly helped in acquiring a ready market for our coffee,’’ said Chemelil.
