Stakeholders call for more investments in cane growing to meet high demand

Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) has called for more investments in cane growing and development in order to meet the ever increasing demand for the commodity.

AFA Chairperson Carnelly Serem said there has been a systematic increase in the demand for cane and that the growth of many sugar milling companies under the cane and nucleus capacity has led to unorthodox means of competition among millers.

Speaking in Kisumu during the 2nd symposium on innovation in the sugar industry, Serem said the government halted cane harvesting from July to December this year to give room for cane to mature.

“The closure led to an acute shortage of cane in the country,” he said, further lamenting that most mills in the country were operating on old machinery.

He urged the youth to venture into cane growing and development and millers to pay both workers and farmers.

The chairperson expressed concern why private mills are doing better compared to state owned ones.
