Stanbic Bank, County partner to train VTC instructors on digital skills

Stanbic Bank has partnered with the County government of Taita Taveta to provide a one-week digital skills training to Vocational Training instructors, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) entrepreneurs on the use of online platforms to grow their businesses.

Speaking at Mwanjila Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Bura on Friday after receiving 10 desktop computers from Stanbic Kenya Foundation, Governor Andrew Mwadime noted that his open door policy is bearing fruits and many partners have come on board to support the county’s education agenda.

“We have to go out and seek partners to support our development agenda. Our financial resources are not enough to execute all our plans and this is the reason I have been calling on development partners. We thank the Stanbic Kenya Foundation for this initiative and we are looking forward to more partnerships,” said the Governor while issuing certificates to the trainers.

Mwadime said that there was a growing need for entrepreneurs to join the digital market in order to favorably compete with other business people by exposing their products to the global market.

“Covid-19 came and we saw its negative impacts on businesses. Now more than ever, we need to be innovative to grow our businesses and cushion them from uncertain future threats,” he said.

Taita Taveta County Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo issuing a certificate to a woman after successfully completing her one-week training on digital skills.

Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo said that online trading can help to make goods and services more available for consumers, increase market access for MSMEs and encourage investments, unlike when trying to acquire a physical house or stall.

On her part, Gloriah Monikombo, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Libraries and VTCs, and also Acting CECM for Trade, Tourism, Cooperative Development & Industrialization urged residents to join VTCs and gain skills that will aid them to venture into self-employment and boost their employability.

Stanbic Kenya Foundation Head of programmes Madam Dorine Nalo called on the dominant MSME sector in the country to exploit the increased online platforms for growth.

“There exists growth opportunities for entrepreneurs in the country in the e-commerce industry. Women and youth in MSMEs need to embrace technology to exploit the new markets in order to grow their businesses,” said Nalo.

Also present during the event were; CECM for Agriculture, livestock, Fisheries, Irrigation & Blue Economy Erickson Kyongo, CECM for Youth, Sports, Gender, Culture & Social Services Shedrack Mutungi, CECM Finance and Economic Planning Dawson Mzenge, ICT Director Gibran Makumbi among other Stanbic Bank Managers across the Coastal counties.
