Machakos coffee farming revival on course, Cooperatives Chief Officer says

Machakos County Chief Officer for Cooperatives Anthony Mutunga has affirmed that the revival of coffee farming in the county is well underway.

Speaking on the county’s ambitious plans to boost the once-thriving coffee sector recently, Mutunga emphasized the importance of integrity in cooperative leadership as a key driver for success.

“There’s a need for integrity in cooperative leadership for coffee farming to be revived to its former glory,” Mutunga stated, exuding optimism about the sector’s future.

He added that coffee farming could once again become the “crème de la crème” of Machakos County’s agricultural landscape.

Mutunga highlighted the efforts of both the county and national governments, which are working together to ensure that farmers benefit from their hard work.

“We are happy the farmers are positively responding to coffee revival because the seedlings the county government gave out are doing well. Also the farmers are now getting an advance of Ksh40 per kilogram whenever they deliver their coffee to factories,” he said, stressing the importance of this support in stabilizing farmers’ incomes.

Furthermore, the government has ensured that the price of a kilogram of coffee does not drop below Ksh80, providing a safety net for growers.

Mutunga urged coffee farmers and cooperative societies to back the initiative fully, saying their cooperation is vital to ensuring the sector’s revival.

“It is our wish to see the societies doing well and the benefits coming back to the locals. I know many of these societies are having problems like lack of farm inputs that’s; fertilizer, pesticides among others but all this will be a thing of the past. Soon we will be supporting them with extension officers to go round checking how they are doing,” he added.

The revitalization of the coffee sector is expected to bring renewed prosperity to Machakos, with farmers hopeful that they will soon “smile all the way to the bank.”
