Kitui county has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with agriculture-based Saccos and community development committees to boost production and promote food security.

Speaking during the event’s launch at the Kitui Agricultural Training Centre, the county’s Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gladys Kivoto, said that the signing marks a significant milestone in efforts to transform the area’s agricultural sector and foster economic growth.

Kivoto said that the pact aims to provide local farmers with improved access to credit facilities, modern farming technologies and market linkages.

“This partnership is also designed to empower local smallholder farmers by addressing key challenges and unlocking new growth opportunities. This agreement marks the beginning of a new era for agriculture in Kitui County,” she said.

Kivoto said the community-driven development committees will play a crucial role in identifying the specific community needs and implementing the targeted agricultural projects.

“Their grassroots involvement will ensure that resources are effectively allocated, addressing the unique challenges faced by farmers in the county,” she said. “And on their part, Saccos will offer farmers affordable financial services, enabling them to purchase inputs, expand their operations and invest in value addition technologies,” she added.

The Officer said that the partnership also aligns with the National Agricultural and Value Chain Development Project’s (NAVCDP) broader goals including; food security, improvement of value chains and fostering economic resilience.

Cooperative leaders expressed their pleasure with the pact, saying the agreement would lead to sustainable agricultural development focusing on climate-smart practices and long-term food security in the county.
