County Government of Busia launches training initiative for SACCO managers

The County Government of Busia has launched a major initiative to streamline the disbursement of agricultural funds by training SACCO managers in proper financial management and accountability. The initiative aims to ensure that government resources allocated to farmers are effectively utilized to promote economic growth.

During the training session for 126 SACCO managers from 14 wards, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Dr. George Mukok, announced that the county would no longer issue loans directly to individuals under the Agricultural Development Fund (ADF), as was previously the case. Instead, funds will now be channeled through cooperative societies, ensuring better oversight and minimizing the risk of misuse.

“We have encountered challenges with individual loan disbursements in the past. By strengthening cooperative societies, we are ensuring that farmers access financial support in an organized and sustainable manner,” said Dr. Mukok.

Mr. Elijah Mwaro, Chief Officer for Agriculture, reinforced the county’s commitment to investing in cooperative societies, emphasizing their crucial role in transforming Busia’s agricultural economy.

Busia County Attorney, Mr. Innocent Omboko, highlighted the establishment of a County Cooperative Loans Board, which will address financial challenges faced by societies across the region.
