The Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has officially commissioned a Ksh 3 billion De Heus Kenya animal feed plant in Athi River aimed at boosting the livestock sector.
Speaking during the launching, Kagwe said the investment marks a shift from increasing herd numbers to improving productivity per animal. He reaffirmed the government’s target to double milk production from 5.2B to 10B litres through better feed and efficiency.
The plant, owned by global feed producer Royal De Heus, is the largest pellet-making feed mill in the region, with an annual capacity of 240,000 metric tonnes. It will create 280 direct jobs and over 1,000 indirect opportunities.
Equipped with a modern laboratory for advanced feed testing and quality control, the facility will serve up to 80,000 farmers annually.

The CS revealed that the government is also planning to introduce a feed quality index, expand irrigation through dam construction, commercialize land for maize and soya production, and establish feed reserves to stabilize prices.
Leaders, including Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and Henk Jan Bakker, hailed the investment as a major boost to Kenya’s agro-industrial growth.
The commissioning signals Kenya’s renewed push toward quality-driven, export-competitive livestock production.
