The Kirinyaga County Government has disbursed KSh 20 million to 20 ward-based Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs), in a move aimed at opening up affordable credit access for more than 9,300 farmers across the county.
According to Kirinyaga County governor, Anne Waiguru, each of the county’s 20 wards received KSh 1 million under the programme, which forms part of a broader economic empowerment drive targeting women and other vulnerable groups
Waiguru said the cash injection would strengthen farmer-owned SACCOs and widen access to financial services that allow members to invest in agriculture and other income-generating activities.
According to the governor, the programme is expected to directly benefit 9,312 farmers, easing their access to affordable loans while encouraging savings and boosting investment along agricultural value chains.
“The county government will continue investing in programmes that directly improve the livelihoods of our people. Through our ward-based Saccos, farmers can access affordable credit to expand their farming enterprises, add value to their produce and improve their incomes,” Waiguru said.

The governor added that the funds would allow the Saccos to expand lending to their members, support farm production, promote value addition and strengthen market linkages, which she said would raise household incomes and generate employment opportunities across the county.
Waiguru said access to affordable financing remains among the biggest hurdles facing small-scale farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs in Kirinyaga, noting that the initiative had been prioritised after it was identified through public participation forums.
She reiterated the county administration’s commitment to channeling resources into programmes proposed by residents themselves, saying such investments remained central to improving livelihoods across Kirinyaga County.
