Some 735 households drawn from across Taita Taveta County’s 20 wards are set to benefit from a Ksh12 million Wezesha Jamii Programme, a county-sponsored initiative targeting poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme applies the Ultra-Poor Graduation (UPG) model, which combines cash transfers, business training, savings groups and mentorship to help extremely poor families build sustainable incomes.
Governor Andrew Mwadime, alongside Village Enterprise Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sazini Mojapelo, presided over the official launch of the Poverty Alleviation, Empowerment and Enterprise Development Fund Act, 2026, and the signing of an addendum to the county’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Village Enterprise.

Mwadime said the occasion reaffirmed the partnership’s shared agenda to create sustainable economic opportunities, strengthen household resilience and help vulnerable communities move from extreme poverty to self-reliance.
Mojapelo affirmed Village Enterprise’s commitment to supporting extremely poor households through sustainable livelihood programmes and commended the county for institutionalising the initiative through legislation.
The organisation’s regional director of programmes and Kenya Country Director, Leah Okero, pledged continued technical support to strengthen implementation and expand the programme across the county.
Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo said the Act would provide a strong framework for sustainable economic empowerment and improve the lives of vulnerable households
