Small-scale traders in Ndagani, Tharaka Nithi County, are set to benefit from a newly constructed market as the county government moves to create a safer and more organised environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Speaking after officially opening the market, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki said about 170 traders had been registered to operate from the new facility, giving them a designated space to conduct their businesses.
Njuki directed traders operating along roadsides to relocate to the new market, warning that roadside businesses exposed traders and motorists to safety risks.
“Once the deadline is given, those who will continue selling along the roads will have their kiosks removed,” Njuki warned.

The governor said traders would be issued with a deadline to move into the facility, after which enforcement measures would be taken against those who continue operating along the roads.
He said the county government would not allow businesses to operate in locations that could expose traders and members of the public to accidents, urging small businesses to take advantage of the new facility.
The market will also have a daycare centre, which Njuki said would support traders with young children by allowing them to run their businesses without the challenge of caring for their children while serving customers.
The new market is expected to support traders’ businesses by providing safer trading spaces, childcare services and an organised environment that can improve productivity, customer access and business growth.
