Youth in Vihiga County are embracing fish value-addition initiatives aimed at boosting incomes and creating jobs in the agriculture sector.

The shift from traditional fish farming to processing and marketing is enabling young people to produce higher-value products such as fillets, samosas, and smoked fish.

The initiative is being implemented under the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) through the ARNSA project, funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation in partnership with International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Vihiga County Government.

A fish processing kiosk has been handed over to 16 youth from Shiru Ward Aquaculture Group to lead the venture. The group, which manages 10 fish ponds, will source, process, and market fish locally reducing reliance on distant markets like Kisumu.

IFAD consultant and researcher Kevin Obiero said the team was keen on incorporating the views of the youth.

He said the programme will cut post-harvest losses, expand market access, and improve livelihoods.

Youth leaders have expressed readiness to run and grow the business, with officials emphasizing sustainability through formal agreements and adoption of modern technology.

The project is part of a wider NORAD-funded initiative targeting several counties, aiming to strengthen aquaculture, improve nutrition, and increase incomes for smallholder farmers.
