Meru County has launched a countywide mass vaccination drive to protect cattle from Foot and Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease.
The County Government of Meru, through the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), is running the exercise in partnership with the Meru Central Farmers’ Cooperative Union (MCFCU). The campaign targets Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), two illnesses that threaten livestock productivity across the county.
Officers are implementing the exercise through an e-voucher vaccination system. Under this approach, they scan each animal’s muzzle to register it before administering the recommended vaccines. As a result, the process gains stronger traceability, efficiency and accountability at every stage.

To accelerate implementation, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the County Commissioner jointly chaired a consultative meeting. Key stakeholders attended to assess progress and identify measures that could fast track the exercise.
Participants emphasised the need to maintain a vaccination pace that matches the number of cattle already scanned. They stressed that registered animals should be vaccinated promptly, so that farmers across the county can benefit fully from the programme.
Meeting participants also agreed to activate Sub-County Coordination Teams to strengthen coordination, monitoring and supervision at the grassroots level. These teams will play a critical role in ensuring seamless implementation and timely delivery of vaccination services to farmers.
Authorities expect the coordinated push to accelerate vaccination coverage and safeguard livestock across Meru County.
