- Government outlines major housing and market projects in Siaya
- New infrastructure targets traders, students and local businesses
- Thousands of households are also set to gain electricity connections
President William Ruto has announced that the Government is investing Ksh28 billion in affordable housing, modern markets and student hostels in Siaya County as part of efforts to improve living conditions and expand economic opportunities.
Ruto said the investment will support the construction of 10,000 affordable housing units, 20 modern markets and student hostels with a combined capacity of 8,000 beds across the county.
The President said the projects are expected to provide decent and affordable accommodation while creating opportunities for traders, businesses and other enterprises in Siaya.
“Construction of the Ukwala modern market will begin shortly,” Ruto said, highlighting the Government’s plans to expand infrastructure that supports small businesses and local trade.

Ruto made the remarks after inspecting the ongoing construction of 340 affordable housing units at Ukwala in Siaya County.
The housing project forms part of the wider affordable housing programme being implemented by the Government to increase access to decent homes for Kenyans while generating employment through construction activities.
In addition to the housing and market projects, the Government is investing Ksh2.8 billion to connect 21,000 households in Siaya County to electricity under the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity project. The electricity connections will help improve access to power for households while supporting economic activities and businesses.
The investments are expected to boost infrastructure development in Siaya County and contribute to improved access to housing, markets, education facilities and electricity.
