- Samburu senator calls for investigations into alleged livestock killings during security operation

Samburu County Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi has called for investigations into an alleged security operation in Waso Ward, Samburu East Constituency, in which hundreds of livestock were reportedly killed and two residents shot and wounded.
Addressing the Senate, Ltumbesi claimed security officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) killed 415 goats and 102 cattle over three days.
He alleged that 15 goats and two cattle were shot at Losesia on Saturday, before another 400 goats and 100 cattle were killed at Nolng’erdeed on Monday. Two residents, identified as Leapem and Lesidiya, were also allegedly shot and wounded.
The senator questioned the purpose and outcome of the operation, saying there had been no reported arrests of suspected bandits or recovery of stolen livestock.

Ltumbesi urged the Interior Cabinet Secretary and Inspector General of Police to disclose the legal basis, objectives, commanders and units involved in the operation, as well as who authorised it.
He also called for investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Affairs Unit, and demanded a verified record of livestock killed, people injured, arrests made and animals recovered.
The senator further called for medical treatment and compensation for the injured residents, as well as compensation and restocking for affected families.
He urged the government to halt the alleged targeting of livestock, publish rules of engagement for pastoral areas and engage local communities in efforts to address insecurity.
