By Munene Maina.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Co-operatives through the State Department of Co-operatives is spearheading key initiatives to improve performance in the Co-operative sector.
These include the National Co-Operative Development Policy, which is in final stage, automation of the Co-operatives registration which will be linked to Huduma centres and development of Strategic Plan to steer the sector in five years.
Addressing delegates of Harambee Sacco during their Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) in Nairobi recently, Principal Secretary State Department of Co-operatives, Ali Ismail Noor said Co-operatives world over have become important vehicles for wealth and employment creation.
“Co-operatives in Kenya traverse across all sectors of economy and have been involved in improving people’s livelihoods right down to the grassroots,” he said.
He lauded Harambee Sacco for being resilient despite a challenging year to post good performance.
“With over 80 thousands members and more than Shs14.5 billion in members’deposits, Harambee is indeed a giant Sacco in the country,” he noted.
