The State Department for Trade and the Office of the Attorney-General have wrapped up a two day workshop in Nairobi to review the Draft National Trade Development Bill, 2025. The aim is to give Kenya a clear and workable legal framework for promoting, regulating and developing trade.
Participants went through the bill’s main provisions and worked to tighten its legal drafting. They also checked it against the Constitution and existing laws, so that nothing in the proposed law clashes with current legislation.
READ:
At its core, the bill seeks to strengthen both local and export markets. It also aims to improve coordination among the national government, county governments, the private sector and other players in the trade sector, who often work separately.
Once finalised, the law is expected to create a more supportive environment for trade development. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) stand to gain the most, since the framework is meant to back their growth. Beyond that, it is intended to make Kenya more competitive in regional and international markets.
