Cooperatives in Kiambu County have grown their capital base to over Sh5 billion in the last five years.
This was disclosed by the County Director of Cooperatives, Abigail Tabu. She attributed the growth to increase in membership which rose to 400,000.
“There are 584 registered Co-operatives in Kiambu. We also have 43 Housing Cooperative societies”, she said.
The director said Co-operatives play an important role in the socio-economic development through the creation of jobs, improvement of member income, enhancement of agricultural production and productivity, the promotion of value addition and social stability.
“Because of their contribution towards improving household incomes and wealth creation, the Government has prioritised the revitalisation and development of Co-operatives”, added Tabu.
She advised Cooperatives to diversify to medium and high technology products in order to secure and expand market share.
