Residents of Siaya County have been asked to form more rural based savings and credit co-operative societies to help them in tapping the various development opportunities.
Wilfred Ongoro, a Director of Co-operative Bank observed that a lot of opportunities like the sorghum farming which is currently being supported by the Kenyan Breweries is a good venture that needs to be explored.
He said that it is only through Saccos that farmers can have the capacity to negotiate for better terms with the breweries to enable them realize proper benefits as opposed to entering into such deals as individuals.
Mr. Ongoro, who spoke during the launch of Nyamanwa Agribusiness Sacco in Bondo town, stated that Saccos can also have the capacity to hire experts when necessary.
The Director, who doubles as the Chairman of the Nyamanwa Agribusiness Sacco regretted that a lot of fish cage farming activities have failed in the region because people do them as individuals.
He took the opportunity to implore retirees to take a leading role in spearheading the establishment of such rural Saccos, noting that this is the time that they need to bring home their skills to develop their respective regions.
Mr. Ongoro said that retirement should no longer be seen as a death sentence but an opportunity to begin a new life for development.
He revealed that through the Nyamanwa Agribusiness Sacco, they are going to embark on large scale farming of sorghum as a cash crop, targeting the market that is already provided by the Kenya Breweries Limited.
