Cabinet Secretary Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development Simon Kiprono Chelugui has urged cooperatives to invest in technology to tackle climate change which has become a challenge in the development of cooperative movement.
Speaking during the 7th Annual Conference 2023 at the Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK), Chelugui said climate change has affected the cooperative movement hence cooperatives have to act.
He stated that the conference, themed “The Role of Social and Solidarity Economy in Sustainable Development, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaption”, will empower cooperatives to become critical players in mitigating climate change.
The CS pointed out that for cooperative movement to tackle the effects of climate change, they need innovative ideas and practical solutions, technology governance and leadership.
CUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Kamau Ngamau said climate change is of focus this year since it has negatively affected all areas.
He appreciated the commitment of the government to taking action to mitigate climate change, the bottom-up economic transformation agenda commits to several action aligned to climate change mitigations, some of this include the formulation of environmental and climate change agenda, climate smart agriculture and promotion of agroforestry, the deliberation in this conference will speak directly to government agenda” he said.
The VC said CUK and Moshi Cooperative University will continue to partner on research issues affecting the communities.
He noted that they will continue providing a forum for discussion and interrogation of the research output.
Vice Chancellor Moshi Cooperative University Prof Alfred Sife, in speech presented by deputy vice chancellor Prof John Safari, said transforming the community’s livelihood in the era of devastating climate change requires multidisciplinary approaches.
The programme featured four keynote speakers and more than 35 presentations to topics related to social finance and climate change mitigation, role of entrepreneurship, ICT and cooperatives, sustainability, e-commerce and financial technology (Fin Tech).
