The County Government of Kericho has pledged to assist young coffee farmers with technical advice and logistics in value chain to ensure prosperity.
Representing county governor Dr. Erick Mutai during the launch of the sale outlet for coffee products produced by the Kipkelion Youth Service Cooperative LTD at Uhuru Gardens in Kericho, chief officer for agriculture Dr. Michael Bett revealed that the county was poised to enhance its capacity to store and add value to coffee and other agricultural products.
He emphasized the county’s commitment to supporting young farmers and commended the innovative and proactive efforts of the youth from Fort Tenan in both production and marketing.
He lamented that despite farmers toiling hard for their produce, they often received inadequate compensation for their efforts.
“This is the reason we are working on major reforms aimed at reducing the obstacles farmers have and increasing their returns,” he said.
Chief Officer for Livestock and Fisheries Willy Rop announced the upcoming launch of the Last Mile Coffee Project in coffee-growing areas and encouraged potential investors to explore the lucrative coffee industry.
His counterpart in the Trade, Industrialization and Cooperatives docket Jacky Lang’at pledged her department’s support in marketing coffee products from the region.
She underscored the importance of positioning local farmers to benefit from this valuable crop.
Kipkelion Youth Service Cooperative Ltd Chairman Victor Kibet announced the launch of a coffee Tuk Tuk for use to sell assorted coffee products and snacks in major towns and trading centres.
He appealed to the county government for assistance in acquiring containers to serve as outlets.
The group received sponsorship from a German cooperative (DGRV) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), underscoring the international support and recognition it receives for its endeavours.
