The Agriculture and Livestock development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called on youth to engage in agriculture and agribusiness activities as a viable and sustainable career path to rescue themselves from joblessness and also boost food security in the country.

Speaking at the 5th National Agribusiness Summit CS Kagwe said it is time to engage the youth in agriculture in order to revolutionize the sector.

“With the average age of Kenyan farmers now at 64, there is urgent need to inject fresh energy and innovative ideas into the sector.” He said

He urged parents to transfer land to their children and encourage them to explore agribusiness as a viable and sustainable career path.

“The youth are not only more productive but also quick to embrace technology, which is key to modernizing our food systems and achieving food security,” he emphasized.

To enhance agricultural productivity, the CS highlighted the importance of focusing on soil health. As the population grows and available land shrinks, soil testing and the application of appropriate inputs have become crucial for improving yields and ensuring sustainable agriculture.

He also called on the private sector to collaborate more actively with the government in shaping agricultural policies, ensuring that their input is considered during the national budgetary process.

The summit, co-organized by agriculture sector network brought together key stakeholders in the agricultural sector including policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators, academics, and industry leaders, to promote collaboration on advancing innovation, research, and creating a business-friendly environment within the agricultural sector.
