The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reiterated that any individual seeking to sell electricity must be registered with the organization.
David Kariuki, EPRA Deputy Director, Energy Planning said that those who will not adhere to the directive shall risk paying hefty fines.
Kariuki was speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Kisumu where he added that the directive is among draft Energy regulations that the Authority shall bring into effect from next year.
He said that the old regulations, formulated in 2016, have been overtaken by events.
The Deputy Director said that the new document provides a framework that will ensure a coordinated approach to energy planning in the country in order to meet the country’s energy needs.
Kariuki further indicated that it provides a fair, transparent and data-driven methodology of determining tariffs for a sustainable electricity sector, in addition to prescribing reporting procedures and requirements for licensees.
He said that it is also intended to achieve uniformity and consistent reporting of elements required for tariff setting, approval and monitoring.
