Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has promised to support Boda boda operators in the county to start their own petrol station and a spare parts shop that will import their stock directly from China.
“The population of Boda boda riders is five times that of matatu operators, and therefore their contribution in terms of the fuel they consume daily and spare parts they buy is the backbone of Kenya’s economy,” he said.
Wamatangi was speaking at the Githurai Railway Volleyball Grounds in Ruiru during the inauguration of the Githurai 45 Kimwe Boda Boda Sacco.
He supported the Sacco with Ksh1 million, congratulating them for their great vision to combat poverty, saying that his administration will champion their welfare and protect them from intimidation and harassment.
Area Woman Representative Ann Muratha urged the 3,000-member Sacco to stick to their vision of economic empowerment and keep off divisive politics.
She praised the riders for maintaining peace during the elections they held recently.
During the event, the newly elected Sacco officials took oath of office, swearing to protect the Sacco’s constitution and the interests of its members and to treat their clients with dignity.
Ruiru Ward MCA Zack Macharia promised to sponsor over 500 youth through enrolling them in driving schools.
Also in attendance was former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga who gave his contribution and promised to come with opposition leader Raila Odinga to support them.
