Saccos in Kericho have a recorded an increase in bonus payouts to tea farmers this year compared to last year.
Kenya Highlands Sacco paid farmers Sh2 billion in bonuses, an increase of 56 per cent from last year.
“The money should have an impact on the area. It will go a long way in helping farmers meet their development goals,” said Alice Kosgei, the Sacco CEO.
She noted that on average a member will receive Sh60,000. The Sacco has over 70,000 members with 75 per cent being tea farmers.
The Litein-based Patnas Sacco paid about Sh600 million to its more than 20,000 members majority of whom are tea farmers.
“This is an increase from what we paid out last year,” said Nelson Rono, Patnas CEO.
However, most farmers in the region felt the bonuses were little to what other regions received.
“I don’t understand why we received little payment of bonuses compared to what farmers in parts of Central Kenya received. I was expecting more than what I got,” said John Korir, a farmer.
