Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on the Parliament to fast-track the passing of the Cooperatives Bill into law to streamline the cooperative societies sector.
“The problem that we have regarding coffee, tea, dairy milk and other cash crops is governance in our societies. I want to call upon our MPs and Senators to quicken the passing of the Cooperatives Bill to ensure these issues are dealt with,” he said.
Gachagua was speaking in Kiambu town during an impromptu stop after attending a burial ceremony in Githunguri sub-county.
He said that societies should be run by knowledgeable people to ensure that the future of societies is secured, and the Bill will ensure cooperative societies are run by leaders with integrity.
The Deputy President reiterated that the government shall write off unpaid grants by the societies but called on leaders to be mindful of their ability to repay loans.
