Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has disbursed Ksh3 million in social protection grants to 60 groups in Mumias East Sub-County to help members strengthen Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and create income-generating opportunities.
The grants were distributed on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Mumias East Sub-County offices, with each of the three wards receiving Ksh1 million.
The beneficiaries include women, youth, persons with disabilities and widows, many of whom rely on SMEs and other income-generating activities for their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the financial support is expected to provide the groups with capital to expand existing businesses, purchase equipment and increase their ability to generate income.
For small business owners, access to affordable capital remains a major challenge, often limiting their ability to expand operations, employ more workers and increase their earnings.

The grants are part of Kakamega County’s Ksh60 million Social Protection Grants Programme, which is targeting 1,200 groups across all 60 wards in the county.
In his address, Governor Barasa urged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently and invest in viable enterprises capable of generating sustainable incomes. Additionally, the initiative is expected to encourage more residents to engage in small-scale businesses, which play an important role in creating jobs and supporting families.
With the additional capital, the beneficiary groups can invest in activities such as retail businesses, farming, livestock keeping, food processing and other SMEs that can generate regular income.
Ultimately, the programme highlights the role of county governments in providing financial support to grassroots entrepreneurs and strengthening local businesses.
