Africa’s cooperative movement is poised for global recognition as Kenya, with the full backing of the National Government of Kenya and the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), has officially announced its bid to host the 2028 World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) under the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU).
The announcement was made by Patrick Kilemi Principal Secretary at the State Department of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Kenya, during the 2025 SACCA Congress held in Accra, Ghana.
In his remarks, PS Kilemi affirmed the Government of Kenya’s full endorsement and support for the continental bid, describing it as “a defining moment for Africa to showcase the transformative power of cooperatives and credit unions on a global stage, all under the leadership of ACCOSCA.”
ACCOSCA Executive Director George Ombado (AADE, I-CUDE) welcomed the announcement, saying that hosting the 2028 WCUC in Africa would not only celebrate the continent’s progress but also provide an opportunity to share Africa’s story of transformation through cooperatives.

The bid comes at a time of renewed momentum for the African cooperative movement, which has recorded significant milestones that have amplified the voice and influence of African credit unions globally.
Under ACCOSCA’s leadership, the sector has seen growing collaboration, innovation, and international recognition.
Jointly spearheaded by ACCOSCA and the National Government of Kenya, the 2028 WCUC bid is viewed as a strategic step to position Africa as the next frontier for credit union growth.
It aims to spotlight the region’s advances in digital transformation, sustainable development, and member centered socio-economic empowerment.
If successful, Kenya would become the first African nation to host the World Credit Union Conference an achievement that would mark a new chapter for the continent’s cooperative movement on the global stage.
