KUSCCO officials charged in connection with KSh83m theft freed on KSh14.5m bail

Former officials of Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives Limited (KUSCCO) who have been charged in connection with theft of  KSh83 m from the union have been released on a cumulative KSh14.5 million cash bail.

The five George Magutu Mwangi, George Otieno, George Owino, Jackline Atieno and Mercy Muthoni were presented in court on Tuesday.

Milimani Magistrate Dolphina Alego ordered Magutu to deposit a bond of KSh10m, two sureties of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh3m with three contact persons.

While Otieno was directed he deposit a bond of KSh10m with two sureties of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh3m with three contact persons.

On Monday, Otieno presented himself before court for plea-taking after skipping court summons. The official had failed to appear in court last Wednesday, where four other KUSCCO officials pleaded to the charges.

Otieno denied that he had failed to honour summons of appearing in court, saying that he was not aware of the court summons and only learned about them through social media.

The Magistrate also granted Owino a bond of  KSh7m, two sureties of a similar amount or a cash bail of KSh3m with three contact persons.

While Mercy Muthoni was handed a bond of  KSh7m with two sureties of a similar amount or bail of  KSh2.5m with three contact persons.

Other official Jackline Atieno was handed a bond of  KSh10 m with two sureties of a similar amount or bail of  KSh3m with three contact persons.

The five face other charges of Money laundering, stealing by directors and making false documents.
