Meru Governor calls for support to businessmen whose properties were destroyed by demos 

Meru governor Isaac Mutuma has urged residents to support businesses that were looted and vandalized in the recent demonstrations to get back on their feet.

Speaking on Wednesday when he visited  Bei Sawa Supermarket that reopened after being looted and vandalized during the Gen Z protests on June 25, governor Mutuma calls for communal efforts to help businesses run again.

The supermarket was one of businesses affected by the protests during the Gen Z protest and Saba Saba demonstrations in Meru.

The County boss did shopping and also bought foodstuffs for residents at the facility as a way of supporting the business to get back to normalcy.

“The supermarket has been closed for one month since the protests. The employees, farmers and others who supply the commodities have been negatively affected,” Mutuma said.

He said that businessmen should insure their property so that they can be compensated in case of such unfortunate incidents.

“We want Meru to be vibrant. That is why we condemn the destruction of property. It should never happen again because our people will lose their income,” Mutuma said.

The governor said the destruction that was witnessed recently in Meru has never occurred before in the county.

“Even in the post-election violence in 2007/08, there was no destruction like that which was witnessed on June 25 and July 7 this year. We regret it and our people should not allow that to happen again,” Mutuma said.

He said the county government will continue encouraging and supporting businesses and even investors in the county.

The governor was accompanied by deputy governor Linda Kiome, county executive in charge of sports Elias Murega, and County executive in charge of legal affairs among other leaders.

Kiome said she was delighted to see the humility and generosity in governor Mutuma assuring residents that they will continue working together to help businesses.
