Miraa farmers, traders and users in Meru county have come out gun blazing to defend the crop as a cash crop and not a drug as classified by NACADA.
Led by John Mutembei, a miraa consumer, the group stated that the crop is not a drug but a cash crop in Meru and that those classifying it as a drug are just trying to ruin the reputation of the crop.
Mutembei pointed out that miraa consumption doesn’t have any effect on the user.
Geoffrey Miriti urged NACADA to specify which type of khat is harmful.
Catherine Mukami, a trader, said miraa is a source of income for the people of Meru and that
since her childhood, she has seen many people consume miraa yet they have never gone mad.
NACADA says it will come up with laws to prohibit miraa consumption.
