Morocco has overtaken Kenya as Africa’s largest avocado exporter. This is according to Tropical Fruits Market Review, the latest data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The FAO’s review shows that Morocco’s avocado exports surged by nearly 90 percent in 2025 to approximately 141,000 tonnes, pushing it ahead of Kenya’s avocado exports, which declined by about 19 percent to roughly 105,000 tonnes.

The shift marks a major change in the African avocado export market, where Kenya had long held the position as the top avocado exporter in Africa.

Industry analysts attribute the drop in Kenya’s export volumes to Red Sea shipping disruptions, higher freight costs, and logistical challenges affecting access to key European markets.

Despite losing its ranking as Africa’s leading avocado exporter, Kenya remains one of the continent’s top avocado producers, with continued investment in avocado farming, export diversification, and new market expansion efforts.
