Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has celebrated the remarkable progress made in the cooperative movement, from the establishment of new Saccos to the training of leaders in financial management and good governance.
“Under the county’s leadership, 100 cooperative society elections have been successfully conducted, fostering inclusive participation and democratic processes. Furthermore, 600 cooperative leaders have undergone comprehensive training, equipping them with the necessary skills to effectively manage cooperatives,” he said.
Speaking during the State of the County address, Kahiga added that as a result, the county now boasts of being home to 195 active cooperative societies.
“These societies have amassed a total share capital exceeding Ksh2.4 billion and possess an asset base surpassing Ksh22 billion. With over 500,000 Sacco members, cooperatives in the county cover various sectors, demonstrating the county’s dedication to holistic development,” he said.
Kahiga observed that the sectors range from employees, farmers, the business community, transport cooperatives, marketers and a recent inclusion of a worker cooperative comprising mountain climbers, guides and porters.
The Governor said that the county is now actively engaged in developing regulations to ensure compliance and sustainability within the sector.
“Nyeri County acknowledges the importance of a robust legal and regulatory framework for cooperatives. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of county officials and the participation of the county assembly, the Nyeri County Co-operative Act has been aligned with the National Co-operative Development Policy,” he said.
“In a bid to eliminate corrupt practices and ensure adherence to the Cooperatives Act, audits have been successfully completed in 60 cooperative societies.” He added.
