A total of 73,828 members joined different co-operative societies in Taita Taveta County.
Savings and credit cooperative societies (Saccos) led in the total number of registered members.
Taita Taveta County Co-operatives Commissioner Mr. Erastus Gonzi revealed that there are 98 Saccos out of 190 co-operative societies registered in the county.
Gonzi said that Saccos have a registered membership of 54,600 representing 73.96 per cent while other 92 co-operatives share the 19,22 per cent representing 26.04 per cent of the total membership.
According to Gonzi, most of the societies have not been audited due to lack of auditing department making it difficult to get the compliance state of the different saccos and societies in the region.
He also added that due to the Covid-19 pandemic saccos and Societies Annual General Meetings (AGM) were halted, making most of them to defer their AGMs so as to avoid the spread of the virus.
However, Gonzi reiterated that as a department, they have created a conducive environment for co-operatives’ growth and development through guidance and support services to its clients, adding that capacity building to both committee members and members for better service delivery is their role.
