Sacco members protest over poor state of roads

Busia Matatu Saccos members have threatened to stop paying levies to the County Government due to the deplorable condition of the main bus park.
They brought business in Busia Town to a near standstill recently as they protested the condition of the bus stage and roads, and accused the County Government of collecting taxes from them yet the park and road condition remains wanting.
The protesters planted banana tubers in numerous potholes around the park and nearby roads.
“”The County Government has been taxing Matatu Saccos members daily. We don’t know how our money is being spent since our customers also don’t have a place to alight from the Matatus,” said a driver with Bungoma Shuttle.
Traders also joined the protest, saying they have been losing customers because the roads are rendered impassable when it rains. They also threatened to stop remitting taxes if the situation remains the same.
However, when contacted, Roads and Transport Executive, Bernard Yaite blamed the matatu operators whom he accused of failing to cooperate with the County Government.
“Our previous attempts to evict some traders operating illegally from the centre of the park were futile thus making it hard for the contractor to undertake his work,” he said.
