State calls for responsible corporate governance in Saccos

Delegates follow proceedings during Nairobi SACCO Leaders' Consultative Forum held by KUSCCO.

The Government has called for responsible corporate governance in Saccos and accountability by leaders found culpable of financial irregularities.

Principal Secretary for the State Department of Cooperatives Patrick Kilemi was speaking during the Nairobi SACCO Leaders’ Consultative Forum held by the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives Ltd (KUSCCO), where he noted that the government supports transparency and accountability in Saccos.

The PS said that the government recognizes cooperatives as key drivers of positive economic change at the grassroots level.

Kilemi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthen KUSCCO and called on members to exercise patience as the Union implements turnaround strategies.

He emphasized accountability and prudent financial management to ensure the cooperative movement maintains its resilience.

Present during the meeting was David Obonyo, Commissioner for Cooperatives Development, who emphasized the importance of developing a sustainable model of dividend management.

Arnold Munene, KUSCCO Group Managing Director, said that the Union is committed to upholding its mandate as a strong advocacy organization to champion the well-being of members.

The Union has been holding meetings with Sacco leaders across the country to engage Sacco leaders in discussions meant to shape the sector’s collective future.
