State Department of Cooperatives, Secretary Administration, Amos Mariba and officials from the Ministry and Busia County Government have officially handed over the Luanda Cooperative Society ginnery, located in Samia Sub-County, to the appointed contractor.
The State Department has also allocated Ksh. 20 million for the completion of Phase II of the project, which aims to further revitalize the cotton value chain in the region.
This follows the successful completion of Phase I, during which the ginnery received Ksh. 80 million for upgrade of equipment and machinery.

As part of the ongoing improvements, the ginnery—currently the only one in Busia County and also serving parts of neighboring Siaya County—will be fitted with two new ginning machines, a cotton drying machine, and spare parts to support continued operations.
Speaking during the event, Mariba noted that the upgrade aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which seeks to strengthen key agricultural sub-sectors and enhance operational efficiency.
The contractor has been given a three-month timeline to complete the installation and commissioning of the new equipment.
